Charlotte, N.C., November 29, 2008 – Bill Matthews of Birmingham, Ala., and Kathy Kroeger of Franklin, Tenn., won the Foot Locker Cross
Country Championships (FLCC) South Regional at McAlpine Creek Park in
Charlotte, N.C., today. With the
temperature around 45 degrees and a steady rainfall through the girls’ race
that tapered to a drizzle in time for the boys’ race, the runners battled
through a muddy course.
In the boys’ race, with 1200
meters remaining, Bill Matthews, Matt Sonnenfeldt, and C.J. Brown were neck-and-neck. In the last 100 meters, Sonnenfeldt overcame
the other two runners and moved from third place to take the lead. Nearing the
end of the race, Matthews, a senior from the Baylor School, powered forward to grab
the lead from Sonnenfeldt, securing the win in 14:48. Sonnenfeldt, a senior from West High School in Knoxville, Tenn.,
finished second in 14:50, followed by Brown, a senior from Carroll Senior High
School in Southlake, Texas, placing third in 14:59.
The
girls’ race began with a strong pack of ten runners. At the two-mile mark,
Kathy Kroeger, Megan Marsico, and Chelsey Sveinsson broke free from the pack to
battle for the lead. By the final 600
meters, Kroeger, the 2007 FLCC South Regional Champion and the 2006 FLCC
National Champion, gained the lead and finished strong with a time of
17:13. Marsico, a junior at Glenvar High School in Salem, Va., finished
second in 17:15, followed by Sveinsson, a sophomore at the Greenhill School in
Dallas, Texas, in 17:19. In the first
mile, Ashley Brasovan, the 2007 FLCC National Champion, fell but powered
forward to finish fourth and qualify to defend her national title in San Diego,
Calif.
The top ten boys and the top ten
girls of the seeded races qualified to compete against runners from the three
other regional meets in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships National
Finals, which takes place Saturday, Dec. 13 at Morley Field, Balboa Park in San
Diego, Calif.
